James Gunn just gave DC fans something to get hyped about! In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, the DC Studios co-boss spilled the beans on Peacemaker Season 2, hinting at some exciting crossovers with characters from his upcoming Superman movie and other parts of the DC Universe (DCU). Oh, and he casually mentioned there might be “one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show.” Yep, you read that right—Gunn’s got some surprises up his sleeve, and we’re totally here for it.
If you loved the first season of Peacemaker, you’re not alone. The show, which spun out of Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021, was a total hit on HBO Max, winning fans over with its wild humor, heart, and John Cena’s spot-on performance as the messy, helmet-wearing Christopher Smith. That epic Justice League cameo in the finale had everyone buzzing about where the show could go next. Now, with Season 2 dropping on August 21 on Max, Gunn’s ready to take things up a notch by tying Peacemaker into the bigger DCU picture—specifically its “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” storyline.
So, what’s the deal with these crossovers? Gunn’s Superman movie, hitting theaters on July 11, stars David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and a cool lineup of heroes like Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord. According to Entertainment Weekly, Fillion, Merced, and Sean Gunn are all showing up in Peacemaker Season 2. In fact, the season kicks off with Peacemaker trying to join a superhero squad, only to get totally roasted by these Superman characters. Sounds like our boy’s got some work to do if he wants to be taken seriously by the big shots in the DCU!
But that’s not all—Gunn teased that even more DCU characters will pop up later in the season, though he’s keeping the details under wraps for now. That “really big cameo” he mentioned has fans guessing like crazy. Could it be Superman himself? Or maybe someone totally unexpected from another DCU project? We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s definitely got us on the edge of our seats.
The new season’s also bringing some fresh faces to the Peacemaker crew. Michael Rooker, who’s worked with Gunn before, is joining as Red St. Wild—a guy who’s out to hunt down Peacemaker’s best bud, Eagly the eagle. There’s also Tim Meadows playing A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury, who Gunn says is a bit of a jerk but super funny, stepping into the kind of obnoxious role Peacemaker used to play now that he’s softened up a bit.
Gunn also opened up about why it’s taken so long to get Season 2 out—over three years since the first one! Turns out, he’s been pretty busy with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and then taking on his new gig running DC Studios with Peter Safran. He even said that he had to finish writing Superman before diving into Peacemaker Season 2, which actually worked out great since it let him tie the two projects together. One big connection? That Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC) we saw in Season 1—it’s going to be a major part of both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2’s story.
John Cena, who’s back as Peacemaker, couldn’t be happier to return, even with the long wait. “I’m so grateful that the audience hasn’t forgotten about us,” he said, giving a shoutout to fans for sticking around and to Gunn for not giving up on the show. They’re even switching things up with a brand-new opening dance sequence—sorry, “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” fans! This time, Eagly’s getting in on the action, and we can’t wait to see that eagle try to bust a move.
With Peacemaker Season 2 ready to mix its signature chaos with some major DCU connections, it’s shaping up to be a wild ride. Gunn’s got a knack for blending laughs, heart, and epic surprises, so we’re counting down the days until we see who that “really big cameo” is and how Peacemaker fits into the new DCU. August 21 can’t come soon enough!
